Gift Culture – Social innovation in Western Australia (SiiWA)

Our next Gift Culture recipient is Brodie McCulloch from Social innovation in Western Australia (SiiWA). Amongst other activities, SiiWA runs a co-working, collaboration and innovation space called ‘SpaceCubed’ on St George’s Tce, right in the heart of Perth. SpaceCubed is Space3: Space to the power of 3. It enables the coming together of creative and socially-minded individuals from all realms of social life – civil society, government, business. It offers working desks, meeting rooms, as well as space for seminars, workshops and other events.

SpaceCubed is a kind of garden or greenhouse that supports the creative growth of new seeds in Western Australia – new ideas, new projects, new ways of working together. It also fosters the further growth of existing projects, enabling them to grow alongside one another in a healthy social ecosystem that benefits everyone. In so doing, SpaceCubed provides the kind of soil in which a new Western Australia may come into being.

Our gift is, again, relatively small – $50 – but we know that Brodie will put it to good use!

As you can see, we are making a series of smaller donations to begin with, partly to highlight different initiatives and individuals, partly to spread ‘gift culture’ a little bit wider. We are interested in both gifting to cultural life and cultural creativity in general, as well as fostering a culture of giving in Western Australia. Later in this experiment we may also give more substantial amounts via an application process. Again, this experiment is only one way of gifting, and will hopefully be one experiment of many. We have made a number of significant observations already, and may share them here soon.
